Puerto Chacabuco, Chile

South of Santiago, Chacabuco is the site of a famous victory in the Latin-American wars of independence, when, in 1817, South American patriots defeated Spanish royalists. This busy little port is abuzz with river ferries and local colour. Excursions provide a glimpse of the impressive Chilean Patagonia landscape.
